Description

The master program of Modern Chinese Studies is a two-year program suitable for graduate students who have developed an interest in China and now want to take that to a higher level. Designed to provide a comprehensive overview of modern Chinese society and culture, it involves intensive academic training in three specific sub-directions, including Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, and Chinese Philosophy. The program contains public courses as the indispensable component of the educational system at SJTU, fundamental courses as the elementary unit of program education, and frontier and optional courses as the core units to deepen the student’s knowledge in his/her chosen field. In addition, optional courses are also available for all the admitted students in the program to broaden their interdisciplinary knowledge. Students in this program are encouraged to develop or extend their knowledge and understanding of the key approaches and methodologies to the humanities study of modern China, as well as their ability for interdisciplinary research. Faculty members will be always available to advise and guide students through their course study and thesis writing.

Applicants should be citizens wit good physical and mental health from overseas, not currently registered in SJTU at the same degree level and holding a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent by the time of application.
Applicants are normally expected to be predicted or have achieved good academic performance in any subject or discipline, although preference may be given to candidates who have studied previously in the humanities. Graduate Record Examination(GRE) or GMAT scores are optional.
Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of English language proficiency in either of the folling ways: IELTS(academic): overall ≥6.5, subtests≥5.5; TOEFL: IBT overall ≥90, writing≥22, reading≥20, listening≥20, speaking≥20.
If you graduated from high school or universities in native English-speaking countries listed as below and have got your graduate and degree certifications from thos universities, then you can apply without TOFEL or IELTs results in the following cases:
3.1: During your previous study, all of your programs were taught in English and all of your tests before were taken in English.
3.2: Your application date for this program should be less than 2 years to your graduation date.
3.3: Your previous school or university can issue an official certificate in English with the university’s official letter paper to prove you were taught in English before,

Note: Shanghai Jiao Tong University doesn’t offer accommodation for non-degree and Chinese language students, but non-degree and Chinese language students can apply offcampus accommodation.

All dorms are equipped with air-conditioner, free of charge internet service, phone and TV set, beddings.

Those who live in Minghang Campus for 2 semesters, accommodation fee during summer or winter vacation will be free.

About the University Summary

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), as one of the higher education institutions which enjoy a long history and a world-renowned reputation in China, is a key university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People's Republic of China and co-constructed by MOE and Shanghai Municipal Government. Through some 120 years' unremitting efforts, SJTU has become a comprehensive, research-oriented, and internationalized top university in China.

By December 2018, SJTU has had 30 schools/departments, 31 research institutions, 13 affiliated hospitals, 2 affiliated medical research institute, 12 directly affiliated units and 6 directly affiliated enterprises, with 16,129 full-time undergraduates and 30,217 postgraduates (14,439 full-time master degree candidates and 7,882 full-time doctorate degree candidates), 2,982 overseas students (among which 1,698 are postgraduates). Today SJTU has 67 undergraduate programs covering 9 major disciplines: economics, law, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and arts. Since 2000, there are 49 national higher education teaching achievement prizes （36 completed independently）.
