Mathematics forms the cornerstone of the sciences, playing a powerful dual role as both a pure science and a tool for solving problems and modeling phenomena in other disciplines. For example, mathematics allows us to build efficient algorithms in computing, investigate rare events in financial markets, model the physical universe, develop predictions for climate science, map and study the human genome, and analyze the structure of the human brain. Mathematics draws vitality from questions arising in the natural world, as well as applications to industry and technology, and yet it is grounded in rigor and abstraction.

The Mathematics major is designed to give comprehensive training in both mathematics and its applications to prepare you for a career or more advanced degree programs. Courses required for the Mathematics major provide essential training and experience in analysis, algebra, differential equations, and probability theory. Mathematics elective courses cover numerous topics of pure and applied mathematics, including statistics, numerical analysis, partial differential equations, topology, differential geometry, scientific computing, mathematical finance, abstract algebra, number theory, and functional analysis.

NYU Shanghai offers two-degree tracks in Mathematics: (a) Mathematics and (b) Honors Mathematics. Students who are interested in pursuing graduate study in Mathematics or related disciplines are encouraged to consider the Honors Mathematics degree.

- The SAT Reasoning Test (essay test not required); or

- Three SAT Subject Test scores (one in literature or humanities, one in math or science, and one of your choosing); or

- The International Baccalaureate Diploma; or
- Three IB higher-level exam scores (if you are not an IB Diploma candidate); or
- Results from a nationally accredited exam that is considered locally to signify the completion of secondary education, is administered independently of the student’s school and has been approved by the NYU Office of Undergraduate Admissions

Residential life, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities are central to the NYU Shanghai experience. Living in our residence halls is a great way to be engaged in all aspects of NYU Shanghai. Students live in comfortable residence halls that offer co-curricular educational opportunities. Students occupy single, double or triple rooms on floors with 18-20 students and an upper-class resident assistant (RA), who also serves as a peer mentor. The rooms contain the basic amenities, including beds, desks with chairs and closets. Each floor has communal bathrooms and sinks, and students have access to shared kitchens and a washer and dryer. Along with the RA, Office of Student Life’s Residential Life team serves as an additional resource and support system to students as they navigate the university environment.

The Residential Life team is responsible for students’ experience in the residence halls, ensuring an environment that supports their academic goals and personal interests. The Residential Life team also creates a supportive yet independent community, transitioning students to the experience of living away from home. NYU Shanghai offers residential programming designed to promote learning outside the classroom, cultural appreciation, and a sense of community among students. Finally, the Residential Life team is responsible for upholding a high standard of conduct and safety in the residence halls.

NYU Shanghai is China’s first Sino-US research university and the third degree-granting campus of the NYU Global Network. We were founded in 2012 by New York University and East China Normal University with the support of the city of Shanghai and the district of Pudong.
