Description

The study of economics will enhance your fundamental analytic and quantitative skills.  It leads naturally to careers in business, law, and in economics research and consulting, as well as provides a solid foundation for students who will pursue an MBA degree. Students who wish to attend graduate school in economics should take courses in mathematics beyond the requirements of the economics program.

The economics faculty at NYU Shanghai offers a rare combination of excellence in research and teaching. Many of the economics courses offer the advantage of a liberal arts college setting, including small class sizes and a significant interaction between faculty and students. The economics curriculum at NYU Shanghai is designed to introduce students to these fundamental dynamics of human life and, in doing so, is grounded in three basic pedagogical principles:

  • Undergraduate students must be exposed to the “big ideas” and pressing social issues of our world and given economic frameworks for thinking about them.
  • A meaningful study of economics requires being able to think about problems from local, regional, and global perspectives.
  • Understanding how individuals’ make decisions also requires incorporating insights from neuroscience and psychology.

Effective economic analysis increasingly involves both conducting and effectively communicating the results of quantitative analyses of data using econometric methods.

The economics major requires the completion of 12 courses. Given the sequential nature of the major, students are strongly advised to begin as early as possible. Ideally, six full semesters are required to complete the economics major, as it is impossible for students to complete it in fewer than five semesters. Students must pay close attention to the prerequisites for each course, as they are strictly enforced.

Required for the major are six courses that ensure student proficiency in each of these three core areas: microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. Thus, all majors are provided a solid foundation of knowledge in understanding the economic way of thinking to analyze both individual and aggregate economic activity. In addition, these courses demonstrate how statistical analysis of economic data is conducted and provides an overview of how to carry out and interpret empirical research. Following the completion of these six core classes, students are free to choose among a host of courses that either further develops their theoretical foundation or demonstrate the application of this knowledge to specific fields of study within economics such as development economics, behavioral economics or public economics. All intermediate and advanced level courses at the 300 and 400 level are taught in small sections and include a great deal of interaction with the professor.

Residential life, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities are central to the NYU Shanghai experience. Living in our residence halls is a great way to be engaged in all aspects of NYU Shanghai. Students live in comfortable residence halls that offer co-curricular educational opportunities. Students occupy single, double or triple rooms on floors with 18-20 students and an upper-class resident assistant (RA), who also serves as a peer mentor. The rooms contain the basic amenities, including beds, desks with chairs and closets. Each floor has communal bathrooms and sinks, and students have access to shared kitchens and a washer and dryer. Along with the RA, Office of Student Life’s Residential Life team serves as an additional resource and support system to students as they navigate the university environment.

The Residential Life team is responsible for students’ experience in the residence halls, ensuring an environment that supports their academic goals and personal interests. The Residential Life team also creates a supportive yet independent community, transitioning students to the experience of living away from home. NYU Shanghai offers residential programming designed to promote learning outside the classroom, cultural appreciation, and a sense of community among students. Finally, the Residential Life team is responsible for upholding a high standard of conduct and safety in the residence halls.

NYU Shanghai is China’s first Sino-US research university and the third degree-granting campus of the NYU Global Network. We were founded in 2012 by New York University and East China Normal University with the support of the city of Shanghai and the district of Pudong.

NYU Shanghai seeks to cultivate globally-minded graduates through innovative teaching, world-class research, and a commitment to public service.

Our student body currently consists of 1,300 undergraduate and graduate students, half of whom are from China. Students from the United States and some 70 other countries represent the other half. Our faculty of renowned scholars, innovators, and educators are recruited from the world’s best research universities.

In teaching, NYU Shanghai aspires to prepare its students for lives of discovery, satisfaction, and contribution. Students at NYU Shanghai will study with world-class faculty who nurture their capacity for original, rigorous, and critical thinking and with diverse and intellectually gifted classmates. They will pursue a liberal arts and sciences education in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics while immersing themselves in English, the language of international communication. They will master cross-cultural skills in a community where half of the student body hail from China and half represent countries from around the world. Finally, NYU Shanghai students will learn the role that great cities play in human progress and the interdependent relationship between China and other countries.
